(Left: The stormy view from my Grandfather's backyard)So I spent the week-end with my parents visiting my Grandfather. It was such a quiet and relaxed week-end. The weather wasn't so great. It poured on and off on Saturday until it finally cleared up and the sun came out.
My Grandfather's house is right on the edge of the lake. The livingroom has floor to ceiling windows that overlook the lake. So all week-end we sat in the livingroom with the fire going watching the huge waves roll in. There really is nothing else like the sound of the waves crashing against the shore to fall asleep to.
On Saturday, despite the rain my Mom and I went out to the main street and watched the pumpkin fest parade. The wind was gusting and the rain was pouring but the parade went on anyway. There were veterans marching with flags followed by a pipe band, whom were in full regalia kilts and all (It was REALLY cold for that!) there were the Shriners, kids hockey teams, farmers on tractors pulling carts filled with MASSIVE pumpkins, little kids in pumpkin costumes, clowns and vintage cars. I took a whole bunch of photos. I'll post them as soon as I get a chance.
Seeing the veterans marching proudly in the cold wind and rain almost made me cry. It reminded me of Dzaidziu. I really miss him.
That night we had dinner at home with Grandpa and Shirley. I also learned that my Grandfather pours a REALLY mean drink! WHOA! There was barely any coke in my rye and coke. YIKES! It doesn't really help that we had a late dinner.
Sunday morning my Dad wanted to take everyone out for brunch. I think my Grandfather had called half the restaurants in the county before my Dad found one that was open for brunch and had room. The food was amazing. I had a chicken, proschutto and roasted red pepper sandwich with chocolate cake for dessert. It was divine!
Before we packed up to head back to the city I helped my Dad move one of my Grandfather's saw's into the van. Grandpa decided he wouldn't use it anymore. My Dad is quite excited to put the new saw in his brand new wood working shop. The darn thing was pretty heavy though! It was worth it cause my Dad is REALLY thrilled about it.
It was a great ride back to the city with the trees in full fall colour. I always forget the fantastic beauty of that part of Ontario. The farmer's fields stretching for miles amongst the trees dotted with old brick farmhouses with gingerbread gables. I could live there easily. Maybe someday...
Tonight I have dinner with my parents before they head back home. No matter what I always miss them when they leave. I wish I didn't have to be so far away from them.
